Gateshead Thunder U18 16 - 23 Rylands ARLFC U18Sunday 23rd September 2007 THERE FOR THE TAKINGFans at the newly dubbed "Thunder Bowl" at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow, were given what they came for as both sides played out a great match at their new home. However it is the home side that will feel that they left the match with unfinished business. It was early Rylands pressure, matched with consecutive sets on the Thunder line that gave them the early lead. In 4th minute, Rylands Hooker Liam Walsh scooted over low to get the first points. The Rylands Hooker was unsuccessful in adding his own extras. Early mistakes by Thunder ultimately cost them as they failed to get into the game. However, Rylands indiscipline kept giving Thunder opportunities, and in the 11th minute, Thunder half back Scott Woods re-paid the favour from Rylands and darted over. Reece Young added the extras. Thunder then seemed to find their composure, which also seemed to spur on Rylands. The game became more free flowing, with Rylands finding space down the opposition left flank, and Thunder finding the benefits of percentage rugby, with Rylands constantly giving away penalties. However, in the 18th Minute, a neat inside ball from Rylands Hooker Liam Walsh to the supporting Liam Bate allowed the prop forward to go through the Thunder defence, and give the ball to the supporting Matthew Ryan to score under the posts. Walsh added the extras. Thunder’s Ali Blair played magnificently at the back for Thunder, cleaning up probing kicks from the Rylands Half Back pairing of Ryan & Forster. Thunder continually probed at the Rylands defence, which constantly found problems dealing with prop Danny Dixon's bouldering runs. Thunder indiscipline gave Rylands added possession, and with minutes left in the first half, a Walsh Penalty goal stretched their lead.
HALF TIME: Rylands started the second half positively, after Thunder half back Reece Young kicked the restarted out on the full. This gave Rylands early territory and Rylands centre Steven Fisher crossed to give the visitors the start they wanted. Hooker Walsh added the extras. Matthew Ryan came off injured after 5 minutes. Rylands played conditions well and using the wind to their advantage pinned back the Thunder offence in their own 20. A Walsh penalty in the 52nd minute stretched the visitors lead to 14 points. Thunder continues to probe at the Rylands defence, however The Rylands defence matched the Thunder defence. However, quick play from Thunder’s Mark Dack rewarded Danny Dixon, after a smart pick up from the prop allowed him to go 10 meters to score. However, more Thunder indiscipline allowed Ryland’s Walsh to add another penalty. Thunder continued to work, and a great offload in the tackle by Thunder's Rhys Clarke allowed Winger Alan White to cross. Young was unable to add the extras. However, a lack of concentration from Thunder at the kick off gave Rylands possession and Walsh added a field goal in the last few minutes to give Rylands the spoils.
