History of the Club

The Super League

This history is based on a piece written by local journalist Jeff Bowron, with alterations.

Despite early season problems in attracting fans to a new summer sport, by the end of the campaign the average gate had risen to a creditable 3,700, more than premiership union neighbours Newcastle Falcons.

On the pitch, the "Geordie Aussies" had proved fine ambassadors and under astute coach Shaun McRae finished in sixth place - just two points outside the playoffs.

St. Helens were beaten home and away while the magnificent On the Road victory over Wigan in Edinburgh at Heart of Midlothian's Tynecastle ground emphasised the potential of League's newest recruit.

Impressive back Matt Daylight was the joint leading try scorer in Super League, while winger Ian Herron proved to be one of the deadliest goal-kickers in the top flight.

Optimism was high for the following season but Hull Sharks financial troubles, and the decision by the Premiership clubs to veto Hull's relegation into the NFP following a controversial merger with Gateshead sealed the Thunder's fate.

Gateshead Thunder was wiped off the Rugby League map overnight as the operation moved lock stock and barrel to East Yorkshire, bringing a premature end to professional Rugby League on Tyneside.
