Gateshead Thunder and Northern Rail teamed up to take the Northern Rail ‘Momentum’ Tour to Dunn Street Primary School in Jarrow, South Tyneside yesterday (Thursday 6th March).
Thunder went along with Chris Leech, Youth and Community Liaison Manager for Northern Rail, to promote safety on the railways and give useful tips to the pupils for when they travel on the rail network. As an added bonus, the Northern Rail Cup was brought along for the pupils and school to see. Thunder Head Coach David Woods and players Ryan Clarke, Michael Knowles, Stuart Kain and Netani Suka were on hand to meet everyone and to also coach a session with the school’s Rugby League team.
The pupils at Dunn Street had also taken part in an art competition to draw pictures of Gateshead Thunder’s mascot, Captain Thunder, to design posters to highlight the club and also create poetry about what it is like to play Rugby League.
Teacher Nicola Noble commented: “Today has been not only great fun for the children, by meeting the players and to get to hold the Northern Rail Cup, but also to learn some important lessons about Rail Safety and the importance of taking care whilst on the rail network.”
Thunder Head Coach, David Woods said “It is important, and a privilege, that we as a club can help to promote different initiatives throughout schools in the North East. It’s been great fun for me and the players to meet the school children and to also get to see the Northern Rail Cup.
“It is the first time that Thunder have qualified for the Knockout stages of the competition, so to be part of the Northern Rail Cup tour, whilst still being in the competition, is exciting for everyone.”
The school are now taking part in the another art competition with Gateshead Thunder and Northern Rail, with the winning piece being put onto canvas and displayed at Gateshead International Stadium – home of Gateshead Thunder.
